Split the bill calculator

Total, tip, tax, people. Get the exact amount each person pays, with an option to round up so nobody digs for coins.

Tip
Each person pays —

Too fair? Let fate decide.

Splitting evenly is fine. Watching the names spin, slow down, almost stop on your friend… and land on you is better. SPLOT decides who pays in 7 seconds.

How to split a bill fairly

  1. Start from the total before tip. Tip is usually calculated on the food and drinks, not on tax.
  2. Add tax if it isn’t already included. In many US cities sales tax is added at the end; in most of Europe it’s already in the price.
  3. Pick a tip. In the US, 18–20% is normal for good service at a sit-down restaurant. In much of Europe, rounding up or 5–10% is common.
  4. Divide by the number of people. Round up to a whole amount if you’re paying cash, and put the extra toward the tip.

Example

Emma, Liam, Olivia and Noah have dinner for $148.60. With an 18% tip the total is $175.35, so each person pays $43.84. Rounded up, that’s $44.00 each, and the extra 65 cents goes to the server.

Questions

Should you split the bill evenly or pay for what you ordered?

Even splits are fastest and feel friendlier when everyone ordered about the same. If one person had a steak and a bottle of wine while another had a salad, paying for what you ordered is fairer. Agree before you order, not when the bill arrives.

Is tip calculated before or after tax?

Usually before tax. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the common rule in the US, though many people tip on the total to keep it simple.

What’s a fun way to decide who pays?

Play a game for it. Here are six that work at any table, and SPLOT runs all of them on one phone.
